Contributions
Contribution tracking separates money you added from growth the market provided. A balance that rose $20,000 says nothing until you know how much of it you deposited.
The IRS sets an annual maximum per account type. These are reset each year.
| Account | Under 50 | With catch-up |
|---|---|---|
| 401(k) / 403(b) | $23,500 | $31,000 at 50+ |
| Traditional / Roth IRA | $7,000 | $8,000 at 50+ |
| HSA, individual | $4,300 | $5,300 at 55+ |
| HSA, family | $8,550 | $9,550 at 55+ |
2025 figures. Note the HSA catch-up begins at 55, not 50 like the retirement accounts.
Ages 60 to 63 have a larger 401(k) catch-up. SECURE 2.0 raised it to $11,250 for that band from 2025, taking the total to $34,750. It reverts to the standard catch-up at 64.
