Recurring expenses are the charges that arrive on a schedule without being decided again each time. They form the committed layer of a budget, and their total is usually larger than the individual amounts suggest.
Anything that repeats on a predictable cadence: weekly, monthly, quarterly or annually.
Where they usually sit
- Housing. Rent or mortgage.
- Utilities. Electric, gas, water, internet, phone.
- Insurance. Health, auto, home, life.
- Subscriptions. Streaming, software, gym, news.
- Debt payments. Auto, student, card minimums.
- Childcare. Daycare and after-school programmes.
For most households these account for 50 to 70% of total spending, which is what makes the remainder, the part decided month by month, smaller than it feels.
